The Virtual Garage Sale – Trash or Treasure?

From what I have noticed in recent years, the increased popularity of Facebook, Gumtree and eBay has seen a decline in real life garage sales and a trend in online garage sale pages.

I am a fan of shabby chic decor and love to twist in preloved items with my new decor items. I am always on the hunt for something unusual or eclectic to add to my collection and it has made me wonder though whether you can pick up a bargain treasure on these pages or whether it is just a platform for people to try and offlay their unwanted trash? Would these items have been donated to charity in the past rather than the seller trying to make a quick buck.

I like to buy the odd second hand furniture piece for something individual or to only pay a quarter of the price. I have found Gumtree a good site for finding preloved Freedom branded furniture. You can even pick up some pieces on eBay if you search your local area.

It is good to see we are living in a time where amongst so much new, people aren’t afraid to reuse preloved items. I see this happening a lot amongst Mothers’ Groups and even growing families. I was lucky enough to receive a lot of classic preloved toys from a friend when I had my first child. We are still enjoying these today and look forward to passing them on when we are finished.

I picked up this cute children’s book shelf online recently. What a find and a bargain at only $30.

Here are some cushions I found on an online garage sale page recently for just $15 a pair. They are even nicer in person with intricate beading. Originally purchased from a gift shop in Berry on the NSW South Coast, I plan to use these to decorate my new house, in keeping with my bird and turquoise theme. I love them – what a lucky find!
