Aside from work, and now motherhood, one of my biggest interests in life (to my husband’s dismay) is fashion! Being on a break from work to raise my two young children, I haven’t had the same budget to spend on clothes as I did before. I wanted to share some tips for a timeless look that will take you from Autumn and well into Winter for the stylish, but savvy Mum.This season, I had a look at my wardrobe to see what I could wear from last year. One of my staple items is a classic patterned shirt. I have many of these and find them handy for hiding parts of you that you want to disguise!
A must have in your wardrobe is the ponte legging. These are timeless, a great investment and go from season to season effortlessly. The only time you may need to update these is if they get worn out! I have a few pairs in both black and navy and I like to team my leggings with a long singlet top to cover my hips and then layer with a shirt.
With these items already in my wardrobe, I looked at what I could do to update my look for the new season. Layering is in, so I teamed these key pieces with a knitted vests to wear over my shirts in the same colours as my ponte leggings. These served a few purposes, as they tied together my outfit, hid any problem areas (having had a new baby) and have also come in handy as a cheeky cover when feeding the baby! Knitted vests are a good light weight for winter warmth, given we spend most of our time indoors.
To keep your look on trend you can introduce some key accessories (bag or scarf) in this seasons ‘it’ colours. Maroon, khaki and navy are in and make a nice accent to the clothes I already had. These colours are perfect for Winter and scream out sophistication!
With shoes, even on a budget, I try to invest in one good quality pair of flats and then a couple of pairs of cheapies. If you buy these in a neutral colour they will go with any outfit and take you through many seasons of wear. This season I recommend a flat in metallic.
Finally, never pay full price – ever! Sign up to your favourite store’s loyalty programs and keep an eye out for emails promotions. Stores frequently have percentage off sales making it cheaper to buy full price items on promotion than off the regular sale rack!
To recap, complete your look with:
– long singlet top
– timeless patterned shirt
– ponte legging (navy or black)
– knitted vest
– comfy pair of flats
– accessories in this seasons ‘it’ colours
Look at what you already have and how you can layer your clothes to keep your look up to date and on trend with the new season. Just because you are a Mum doesn’t mean you have to compromise your look. You can still have style on a budget!!! Best of all, you should be able to find all of these key pieces at your favourite store.
